Larry Dunphy Bookstore Owner



Larry is the owner of Books on First in downtown Dixon. He lives in Walton with his wife, Carolyn Chin. They have two daughters, Laurie and Kelly, and a son, Jim.



My first job: I grew up on a farm and later worked at Raynor's Garage Doors.

If I could try another profession I would try: Coal mining , just to say I did it.

My secret to success/philosophy to live by: Short memory.

If I could change one thing about life: Be more considerate.



My hero: Former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon - a decent man whose political philosophy coincides with mine.

My idea of fun: Fine dining, museums, gardening and reading.

A sound I love: "Let me get this round."



A sound I hate: "Isn't it your turn to buy?"



The best thing I've read recently: "Lay of the Land" by Richard Ford.

The movie about my life should star: Tom Waits.

When it comes to art, I like: Literature, opera and architecture.

The first car I ever owned: 1951 Ford.

One person I'd like to meet: Graham Greene - my favorite author who lived an interesting and well-traveled life.

Three essential items: Friends, art ...

My biggest pet peeve: Bad manners.

My guilty pleasure: Single malt scotch.

If I could be any person for one day: George Bush, right before he decided to invade Iraq.

If I could visit any place in the world: Australia.



One thing I learned doing my job: Remember customers names - everybody likes to be special.
