Wood gives Dixon Main Street high marks
Books on First, a 'Must' Stop in Downtown Dixon
"Illinois Lt Gov Corinne Wood celebrated Dixon Main Street
Friday [4 Feb 2000] by cutting the ribbon to the new Main
Street building and touring several downtown businesses. .
. .
"If anyone has any doubt about the success of grass roots
efforts, that person only has to look at Dixon, Wood said.
. . . "
Dixon has moved from a ferry landing in the early 1800s to
a great city, and a big part of that change was because of
the people.
|
"Wood recounted the Dixon downtown
events, the Christmas Walks, the Scarecrow Festivals, and
the monthly Lunch and Learn programs that Dixon Main Street
sponsors.
She praised the Dixon Memorial Arch and the beautiful parks
of the town. . . . "
'The people of Dixon are truly leading the way,' she said.
"After her speech, Wood cut the ribbon in front of the new
Main Street Building. . . . "
Then it was time for a brief walking tour of three downtown
businesses. Audio-Video Connection at its new location next
to the new Dixon Main Street building was the first stop.
Then it was down the street and around the corner to Books
on First. |
"'It's a "must" stop,' [Dixon
Mayor Jim] Burke said.
"Then it was across the street to Trein's 'One of the oldest
family owned businesses,' [Dixon Main Street Program Director
Margie]
Hughes said. Trein's
has been approximately 118 years at the same location.
Larry's First-Hand Report of the Lieutenant Governor's Visit
to Books on First: "She's sharp, articulate, a consummate
politician."
"She wanted to meet the customers sitting with their
coffees.
She shook hands with Greg Brooks who comes in almost daily
for a double cappuccino.
She said, 'Like Norm, except better looking." Now, Greg's
wife Tanya comes in asking, 'Has Norm been in?'." |
